A Visit To Mayhem - Silver Surfer #4

I was in Iowa this weekend and happened across a great store called Mayhem Comics, Cards and Games.

The main level had a large selection of new comics, graphic novels, games and cards.  None of which really interest me.

However, the lower level was filled with back issues and WALL BOOKS!  It's been a long time since I've been to a store with actual wall comics.  And there were a lot of them.  Some seemed pretty expensive to me, but some were very reasonable.

I bought a decent copy of Batman #229 with a Neal Adams cover.

And, I found a copy of Silver Surfer #4 to fill the hole in my collection!  It's not a mint copy, but it presents well.  It has some substantial water damage which is most apparent on the inside of the front and back covers, and is noticeable when holding the book because the right side of it is fairly wavy.

However, it presents well and after about 2 seconds of negotiation, bought it at a very reasonable price.

If I had more time and my want list with me, I'm sure I would have bought much more.  Maybe next time I'm in Iowa!

A Couple Comic Store Finds

I don't find many comics in stores any more, mainly because there aren't many stores any more.

I was at Cedar Cliff Collectibles last weekend and found a couple $5 books, including a Giant Size Werewolf #3, and Thor #135.

Some Tecs

I really don't know why they're called "tecs".  Why choose letters in the middle of a word to shorten it?  Shouldn't they be called "dets"?

Anyway, earlier this year I bought a few Detective Comics from the CGCC boards.

#396, #403 and #406 have Neal Adams' art and/or covers.

It's Been Too Long

I can't believe it's been six months since I posted to this blog!  I've mainly been busy with my sports memorabilia and autograph collecting, but summer is busy with my sons' baseball seasons.

I haven't bought any comics lately other than a Watchmen hardcover that I just received.

However, I have bought some comics since the last time I posted.  Some of those purchases include a small run of Ghost Rider books, including issues 12-17 and 19.  I know it's kind of a campy series, but I think the character is original and a fun read.  I have #1, as well as some of the early Marvel Spotlights, but unfortunately not #5, which is his first appearance.

I regret not buying these 25 years ago when I could have found them in the 25 cent bins.

My First Signatures Series Book

I've been buying some Neal Adams books lately and jumped at the chance to buy this Signature Series book signed by him.

It's a CGC 4.5 copy of Brave & the Bold #79, featuring Deadman.  The scan doesn't show the holder because it's too big to fit on my scanner.

A Couple ASM Upgrades

As part of my recent purchases I was able to upgrade a couple of my Amazing Spider-Man issues.

I bought #31 in VG, which is a nice upgrade to my existing copy that is missing a chunk in the upper left corner.

I also bought a new copy of #102 to replace my heavily-creased copy.

Detective Comics

As part of my recent purchases, I bought several Detective Comics.  I'm mostly a Marvel collector, Spider-Man in particular, but I really only need five more issues of Amazing Spider-Man, so I've been looking for something else to get into.

I don't plan on trying to complete a whole run, but I"m picking up the ones that look interesting.

The oldest one I bought was #321.

#373 features Mr. Freeze.

I can't resist a Joker cover, such as #388.

I've recently gotten interested in Neal Adams' art, so I was happy to pick up #402 and #407.

Some Old School Batman

I've been doing too much buying on the message boards over at CGC, but I've bought some cool books at good prices.

Included in the books I bought are a few old Batmans.  I was excited to buy my first 10 cent cover price Batman: #125.

I also bought copies of #165 and #196.

I'll post a few of the other books I bought over the next few days.  I'm still waiting for one package that was shipped from Canada.  It appears to have been in Chicago about a week ago, but the tracking info hasn't bee updated since.
