Spiderman's 4th Appearance - Strange Tales Annual #2

I've been looking for a nice copy of this book for quite a while.  "Nice" is a relative term I suppose.  I prefer books in the VG+ range so they don't cost a fortune and I can read them without decreasing their value by a hundred dollars.

Most of the copies I've found of this book that were less than $100 had very heavy creasing on the cover, writing, or pieces missing.  This copy has a great cover, but the defects are all on the spine.  There is a four inch split on the top, and some heavy scuffing on the edge.  The cover is firmly attached though, so it's a very solid book.

I think this issue is very undervalued considering it's the 4th appearance of Spider-Man.  This issue came before Amazing Spider-Man #4!

I bought this from, and was very pleased with their grading (they graded this as Fa/Gd), packaging and shipping.  I'll definitely be buying from them again.

A Few Avengers

I have a few holes in my Avengers collection so I've tried to buy a few decent copies for a reasonable price.

I bought #20 and #23 from the same seller on the Collector's Society boards that I bought the Silver Surfer books from.

I also bought #47 from a seller on eBay.

More Silver Surfer Fun

Today I received a bunch of Silver Surfer books I bought off the Collector's Society boards.

I have a few of these issues, but mostly in lower grades.  The first run of Silver Surfer was only 18 issues.  Now I just needs issue numbers 1, 4 and 15.

Fantastic Four #48 - First Appearance of Silver Surfer

I've been on a Silver Surfer binge lately.  I bought a discounted lot of Fantastic Four books from Metropolis Comics.  The lot contained 18 books, including #48, the first appearance of Silver Surfer.

I have all of the other 17 issues, but am hoping to upgrade any of the copies I have with any from this lot that are better, then sell the remaining books.  My goal is to make enough off this lot to make the FF #48 cost me under $100.  If I do really well with the sales, I may even consider selling the #48 and buying an upgraded copy.

This one isn't bad.  Some creases across the top of the front cover are the worst part, along with some stress line on the spine.  I'd say it's VG-.  The other books range from VG- to Fine.  The other books also include other Silver Surfer appearances and covers, so I think those will sell pretty well.

I also bought several copies of Silver Surfer's own series from a seller on the Collectors Society boards.  Those arrived yesterday but I was out of town and couldn't sign for them.  Hopefully I'll get them picked up tomorrow.

Challengers of the Unknown #54

I'm not a big D.C. collector, but I bought this book on eBay on a whim.   The cover looked pretty cool and actually, I thought someone would outbid me.  I paid about $6 for it, including shipping (most of the price was shipping).

It arrived today and is in really nice shape.  I read it.  It was lame.  Sorry Challenger fans, but I really didn't like it.  The characters, dialog and storyline were just lame.  The thing that bothered me the most was the text frequently referring to the team of four as "Challs".  Really?  I don't think you can shorten the word "Challengers" into "Challs".

I won't be blowing my retirement savings on any high grade Challenger books (but I might blow it on some Silver Surfer books.  More on that in a few days.
