A Few More New Books

Today I received three books that I bought from a seller on the CGC message boards.

I bought Doctor Strange #170, Marvel Spotlight #11 and Tales of Suspense #99.

I've listed a few books on the boards today as well.  We'll see how it goes.

SuperWorld Order

Today I got a few comics that I ordered from SuperWorld.  I'm very happy with this order.  Just three books this time.

I bought Avengers #13 in VG+.  This helps fill a hole to complete a run from #11 to #53.

I also bought Fantastic Four #122 (Galactus appearance) in F+.

Lastly, I received Incredible Hulk #135 in F+.

Early Amazing Spider-Man Lot

Yesterday I finally got the lot of five early Amazing Spider-Man books I ordered from Metropolis.  They seem to only ship once a week so they didn't ship for about five days after I place the online order.

Then, the package was scheduled to be delivered the Friday after Thanksgiving, and I was not going to be around to sign for it, so I had it routed to a FedEx store location.  For some reason, that delayed it until Monday.

The lot contained five books: #'s 4, 10, 11, 12 and 16.  I had all but the #4, but it looked like many of the dupes might be better than my current copies.

#4 turned out to be okay.  The worst flaw was that it has two staples added to it.

#10 isn't better than my current copy, but it's okay too.  It has a small piece of tape on the front cover and I'm not sure why, because it doesn't appear to be ripped.  I'll keep my current copy and sell this one.

#11 is nice.  Pretty close to my current copy, but just a bit better.  I'll keep this one and sell my old copy.

#12 isn't great, but still better than my current copy, so I'll keep it and sell my old one.  The worst flaw is the spine roll.

#16 is okay.  About the same as my current copy, but my current copy has "Roy" written in ink on the front cover so I'll keep this one and sell my current copy.

I'm pretty happy with the lot.  Despite it being listed as 55% off, I think the price was just fair, not a huge bargain.  I wish they would provide a little better description of the individual books, but with the lots from Metropolis, it's a bit of a gamble.  I hope I can sell my under copies for enough to bring the cost of my #4 below $150.

Time Flies

I can't believe I haven't updated this since August.  I haven't done too much buying so I haven't had too much to post about.

I recently took advantage of the Avengers movie hype and sold two copies of Avengers #55 (first appearance of Ultron).  I sold a G/VG copy for $75, and a VG/F copy for $150.  I paid $9 for the VG/F copy about a year ago.  The going rate was just too crazy not to cash in on.  I expect to buy a copy back in about a year for about $20.

Meanwhile,. I used the cash to buy some baseball cards and a game used, autographed Josh Willingham batting glove. (See my other blog, Droidtrader's Sports Memorabilia).

I recently upgraded my copy of Amazing Spider-Man #36, with this VG+ copy that I bought from MyComicShop.com.

And tonight I bought a lot of five Amazing Spider-Man comics from Metropolis, including numbers 4, 10, 11, 12, and 16.  I need number 4, and I think the rest may be upgrades to my existing copies.  I'll sell the rest and try to break even (which I probably won't).  I'll post those when I receive them.

New Overstreet Guide

I received my new Overstreet Price Guide for my birthday.  I haven't looked through it much, but hope to start adding some guide values to my inventory spreadsheet to get an idea of the "book" value of my collection.

I haven't made any purchased lately.  Maybe soon.

Tales of Suspense #47 - Early Iron Man

I've wanted an early Iron Man book for a long time.  One where he's still in his all gold armor.  Kind of like a chunky C-3PO.

I recently bought a Tales of Suspense #47 to meet this goal.  It's not in great shape, but I got a pretty fair deal on it from a seller on the collectors society boards.

Silver Surfer #15

I bought a decent copy of Silver Surfer #15 from a board member at the Collectors Society site.  It was in a thread to help raise money for Oklahoma tornado victims, so it was no bargain, pretty cose to book value.

But, I needed this issue so I bought it.  He graded it VG+, but it seems nearly Fine to me.
Now I just need #1 and #4 to complete the short series.

Fantastic Four #51

I recently picked up a cheap copy of Fantastic Four #51 on eBay.

I's actually not in bad shape, but has a large store stamp on the front cover, as well as a couple price stamps.  I really don't mind "defects" like these since they were original to the book when the first owner bought it.

Fantastic Four #19

I think I've been too anxious to buy something lately.  I bought this Fantastic Four #19 on eBay based on one picture and not much of a description.  For the price, it was a good deal, but it's not quite in the shape I would have liked it to be.

I normally shy away from an auction if the picture or description isn't complete and clear.  The book has some pretty bad spine roll, not very noticeable on the front, but horribly noticeable on the back.  Spine roll is one of my pet peeves, and normally don't buy books with the defect.

Anyway, the cover really isn't in bad shape, but there are two rips from the spine, almost an inch long, that goes through all the pages.  But it's complete, presentable and readable.  I paid about half the book value of this issue in Good condition, so overall, I'm satisfied.  Not thrilled.  But satisfied.

Daredevil #8 and a Couple Subbys - SuperWorld Purchase

Today I received a few more books I ordered from SuperWorld Comics.  I've been looking for a nice copy of Daredevil #8 to fill in a hole in my collection.  Other than #1, the next issue I'm missing is #49.

In order to spread the shipping costs a bit (which are very reasonable at SuperWorld), I also bought a couple Sub-Mariner books: #9 and #17.  I still have several holes in that run, but these books were on sale at 50% off so I snapped them up.

Spiderman's 4th Appearance - Strange Tales Annual #2

I've been looking for a nice copy of this book for quite a while.  "Nice" is a relative term I suppose.  I prefer books in the VG+ range so they don't cost a fortune and I can read them without decreasing their value by a hundred dollars.

Most of the copies I've found of this book that were less than $100 had very heavy creasing on the cover, writing, or pieces missing.  This copy has a great cover, but the defects are all on the spine.  There is a four inch split on the top, and some heavy scuffing on the edge.  The cover is firmly attached though, so it's a very solid book.

I think this issue is very undervalued considering it's the 4th appearance of Spider-Man.  This issue came before Amazing Spider-Man #4!

I bought this from MyComicShop.com, and was very pleased with their grading (they graded this as Fa/Gd), packaging and shipping.  I'll definitely be buying from them again.

A Few Avengers

I have a few holes in my Avengers collection so I've tried to buy a few decent copies for a reasonable price.

I bought #20 and #23 from the same seller on the Collector's Society boards that I bought the Silver Surfer books from.

I also bought #47 from a seller on eBay.

More Silver Surfer Fun

Today I received a bunch of Silver Surfer books I bought off the Collector's Society boards.

I have a few of these issues, but mostly in lower grades.  The first run of Silver Surfer was only 18 issues.  Now I just needs issue numbers 1, 4 and 15.

Fantastic Four #48 - First Appearance of Silver Surfer

I've been on a Silver Surfer binge lately.  I bought a discounted lot of Fantastic Four books from Metropolis Comics.  The lot contained 18 books, including #48, the first appearance of Silver Surfer.

I have all of the other 17 issues, but am hoping to upgrade any of the copies I have with any from this lot that are better, then sell the remaining books.  My goal is to make enough off this lot to make the FF #48 cost me under $100.  If I do really well with the sales, I may even consider selling the #48 and buying an upgraded copy.

This one isn't bad.  Some creases across the top of the front cover are the worst part, along with some stress line on the spine.  I'd say it's VG-.  The other books range from VG- to Fine.  The other books also include other Silver Surfer appearances and covers, so I think those will sell pretty well.

I also bought several copies of Silver Surfer's own series from a seller on the Collectors Society boards.  Those arrived yesterday but I was out of town and couldn't sign for them.  Hopefully I'll get them picked up tomorrow.

Challengers of the Unknown #54

I'm not a big D.C. collector, but I bought this book on eBay on a whim.   The cover looked pretty cool and actually, I thought someone would outbid me.  I paid about $6 for it, including shipping (most of the price was shipping).

It arrived today and is in really nice shape.  I read it.  It was lame.  Sorry Challenger fans, but I really didn't like it.  The characters, dialog and storyline were just lame.  The thing that bothered me the most was the text frequently referring to the team of four as "Challs".  Really?  I don't think you can shorten the word "Challengers" into "Challs".

I won't be blowing my retirement savings on any high grade Challenger books (but I might blow it on some Silver Surfer books.  More on that in a few days.

Some #1's

I don't have any big #1 issues from the titles I collect.  No Amazing Spider-Man #1, no Fantastic Four #1 and no Daredevil #1.  No X-Men #1, no Avengers #1 and I'm not sure I'll ever own those.

But I do have a few #1's from a few lesser titles.

For instance, I have a decent Iron Man #1.

I also have Sub-Mariner #1.

I have Captain Marvel #1, but now we're really reaching...

I also have The Incredible Hulk #102.  It's really not a #1, but it's the restart of his own series after Tales To Astonish #101.

More Green Goblin

A while ago I posted about some of my Amazing Spider-Man comics that featured the Green Goblin on the cover.  It seems odd to me that after issue #40, it wasn't until #96 that he appeared again.

Issue #96 was a book I picked up in a 25 cent box at a comic book store in Rochester, MN when I was in high school in the mid-1980's.  It's probably worth $25 now.  For a long time, it was the oldest Amazing Spider-Man comic I owned.

Issues #97 and #98 have better covers.  I can't remember where I picked these up but I have them a long time.

Daredevil

Daredevil is one of those second or third tier titles that doesn't get much respect but it's one of my favorites.  A blind superhero?  C'mon, it's perfect.

My collection is pretty complete in the early part of the run.  I need #1 and #8, then I have them all until #50 and #51.  It starts to get pretty spotty at about #80.

Some of my earliest "expensive" purchases were decent copies of the Spider-Man crossovers in #16 and #17.  I believe I bought them both from Harley Yee back in the early '90's.  Probably from ads in the Comic Shopper.

A Couple Golden Age Purchases

I bought a couple Golden Age comics during the Virtual Comic Convention a few weekends ago and am just now getting around to taking a look at them.  I haven't had a chance to read them yet though.

I bought Vault of Horror #34.  The spine is in pretty rough shape, but I paid about half of what I saw similar copies go for on eBay.  I've always thought these old EC titles were kind of cool so when I saw one at a reasonable price, I grabbed it.  I think  it's too expensive to go after many more though.

I also bought Jumbo Comics #113 from 1948.  It has four or five stories inside.  This copy is in pretty nice shape.  I couldn't find any issues that had sold on eBay, but the only one that was similar in price to this one was in such terrible shape, I wouldn't want to touch it.  It looked like it had mold on it.  Someone is also selling just the front and back cover (no comic) for more than I paid for this one.

I've had pretty good luck selling my duplicate comics on eBay.  I don't have any listed right now, but I plan on listing some more this weekend.
