Daredevil #5 and X-Men #8

I bought a couple more comics off the message boards over at the collectors society.  This time I bought a Daredevil #5 in VG as well as an X-Men #8 in VG+.

I also bought a lot of 71 silver age Marvel's at a bargain price.  The books are mostly lower grade but include some X-Men such as #9 and #10, an Amazing Spider-Man #43, Daredevil #'s 13 and 14, and a whole bunch of Journey Into Mystery/Thors and Avengers.  It will be fun to go through and add the ones I don't already have to my collection and sell the duplicates.

More of My SuperWorld Order

In addition to what I already posted, I also bought a bunch of Hulk comics, an Iron Man and Strange Tales book.

The Hulk books included 117, 124, 127, 132, 134, 136 and 138.  These range in grade from VG+ to F/F+ and in price from $3.50 to $7.50.

The Iron Man was issue #24 and Strange Tales #137.

As I previously mentioned, I ordered Amazing Spider-Man #24 and wasn't happy with it and Ted at SuperWorld happily accepted a return.  I ordered three Avengers books instead, which should be here in a few days.

I continue my search for a copy of Amazing Spider-Man #20.  I have an offer in at Metropolis Comics on a copy they're offering.  There's also a copy on Ebay I'm considering.

My Second SuperWorld Order

As I mentioned earlier, I place another, larger order with SuperWorld Comics as I was just as happy with this one, except for one book, which I've sent back.

I ordered an upgraded copy of Amazing Spider-Man #28, which is really hard to find in decent condition due to the black cover.

It was still more than I'd like to pay for a book in this condition, but I'm hoping to offset some of the cost by selling my old copy on Ebay.

I ordered 5 five more Avengers books including #'s 42, 51, 55, 56 and 62 in VG to VG/F condition.

I also got six Daredevil  comics including #21, 67, 69, 70, 74 and 78.

I'll post some more tomorrow.

Avengers #15 and #17

Today I received a couple Avengers comics I bought from a guy on the Collectors Society forums.  No surprises here, they were exactly as described.

I also received my second order from SuperWorld Comics. It was very similar to my first.  Lots of books with subscription creases but in great shape otherwise.  There was one book I wasn't satisfied with: Amazing Spider-Man #24.  I agreed with the grade, but the defects included some browning on the front cover and a decent sized piece missing.  I emailed Ted at SuperWorld to see if I could return it.  He said (literally), No-problemo!  So, include excellent service to my first two experiences.  I'll be a customer there again!

I'll show some of the comics I bought in the next few days.

SuperWorld Comics Order

Yesterday I received an order from SuperWorld Comics.  It was my first order from them so it was a relatively small order to test their grading and service.

The lower priced, lower grade comics I typically order didn't have scan, just grades and very brief descriptions in the typical, abbreviated format.  The books I bought were 50% of their normal prices.  Normal prices appeared to be pretty close to Overstreet guide.

Shipping was very reasonable, just $7.50 for the 8 books.  I suppose if I was very diligent, I may have been able to find similarly graded and priced books on Ebay, but I think the cost of shipping them individually would have made them more expensive than this order.

I was impressed with what I received.  The books I ordered ranged in grade from VG to F-, with grades in between (VG+, VG/F).  Most of the books had subscription creases, which most sellers will list separately as a defect, but were not in this case.  All inside pages are white/off-white, and there are no pieces missing or writing.

However, most of these books would have easily been Fine or higher had it not been for the subscription crease.  I usually don't mind subscription creases, as it adds some character to the book in its "original" state.  Similarly, I don't mind date stamps.

I bought four Avengers books.  Avengers #27 was listed as VG+.

You can see the subscription crease.  There is some wrinkling of the front cover in the lower left and some pretty light stress lines on spine.

Avengers #40 was listed as VG.  The subscription crease isn't as noticeable due to the light color of the color.  There is also a vertical crease running the length of the book about an inch in from the left edge.  A few more minor stress lines on the spine, but otherwise nice.

Avengers #41 was listed as F-.  There is no subscription crease on this issue, but there are more stress lines around the spine and some stress lines at the staples, but it's a very solid book.

Avengers #72 was listed as VG/F.  There is a subscription crease on this one that is pretty pronounced, and wasn't a sharp enough crease to break the color.    There's also a horizontal wrinkle on the cover from the middle of the left edge about half-way through the cover.

I also ordered three Fantastic Four comics.

#60 was listed as VG+.  There is a very pronounced subscription crease but if not for that, it would easily be F/VF or better.

Fantastic Four #79 was listed as VG/F.  Another subscription crease, with more creasing at the top and bottom edges.  The spine is very nice as is the right edge.

Fantastic Four #97 was listed as VG+.  The subscription crease is similar to #79 and there are two horizontal wrinkles in the cover from the right edge about 3-4 inches in.  They are not noticeable unless you're looking at the book at an angle to the light.

Finally, I bought Daredevil #45, which was listed as F-.  No subscription crease but the bottom staple appears to have popped through the cover.  Other than that, the book is in great shape.

This completes my first order from SuperWorld Comics.  After taking  look at these books, at 50% off book price, I placed a larger, second order.  I ordered 22 more comics including a couple of upgrades to my Amazing Spider-man collection.  The two Spider-man books made up about half of the cost of the order.  The other 20 books are of similar grade to my first order and will fill some holes in my Avengers, Daredevil and Hulk collections as well as one Iron Man and one Strange Tales book.

Hopefully I'll be as happy with those books as I was with my first order.  So far, I am very happy with SuperWorld's grading and service.

Daredevil #6

Today I received a copy of Daredevil #6 that I bought on Ebay.  It's just as I expected it to be thanks to the good pictures the seller used in the auction.

Some the auctions I had up on Ebay ended over the weekend.  I did okay, not spectacular.  I have some more auctions up and have them listed in the Ebay widget on the right side of this blog.

Avengers #16

Today I received an Avengers #16 that I bought on Ebay.  It's in VG condition I'd say (advertised as VG- in the listing).  This is a key issue as Thor, Iron Man, Giant-Man and Wasp leave the Avengers, and Hawkeye, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch join.

I try to pay 50% or less of Overstreet value for silver age books, I paid about 58% of book on this one including shipping, but based on the other issues sold recently on Ebay, I was happy to get this one at the price I paid.

I also bought a Daredevil #6 today.  I'll post that one when it arrives.

A Trip to the Comic Book Store

Today I headed over to Cedar Cliff Collectibles in Eagan (MN).  I was mainly looking for older comics but they also have sports memorabilia, action figures, old Star Wars toys, video games, and you never know what else.

I had a little luck, picking up Secret Wars #8 for $10 in VF or better as well as #1 for $5.  I think this completes the set of 12 for me but I'd have to dig out the box of comics to be sure.

I also picked up a Fantastic Four #42 that I thought would be an upgrade to my current copy, but after getting it home and comparing it, I think I'll keep the copy I already had.

I put up a few of my duplicate comics on Ebay tonight.  You can see them listed in the widget to the right.

X-Men #13 Arrives

As I posted earlier, I bought an upgraded copy of X-Men #13.

It arrived today and looks great.

Here's my existing copy, which I'll probably sell on Ebay soon.  Any offers?

Amazing Spider-Man #39 and #40

The next two Green Goblin appearances are my favorite covers of any comic.  I think I like #40 a bit more, but they're both really cool.

My copies are in pretty nice shape.  Good enough that I'm not really looking to upgrade them.  F/VF for #39 and VG/F for #40 maybe?

Still no luck buying any comics on Ebay, but I did find one on another site.  X-Men #13, which will be an upgrade to my existing copy.  I'll post a scan when I get it.

Amazing Spider-Man #27

Now that I look at this book, I can't remember if I got this issue or #26 in my trade-in at DreamHaven Books.  Regardless, my copy of #27 is in pretty nice shape.  Fine, probably?

This one has great cover art, but not quite as great as the next two issues with Green Goblin appearances, which I'll post about later.

More Green Goblin Issues - #23 and #26

My next two Spider-Man issues with Green Goblin appearances are in very nice shape.  F/VF or better I'd say.  These two represent about my only really good investment.

Back in the '90's I bought several (maybe a dozen?) copies of Valiant's first issue of Magnus:Robot Fighter at DreamHaven Books in Minneapolis.  This comic got really popular so I decided to trade them in for store credit.  I probably traded in at least 10 of the copies, and in return I was able to get these two issues.

The Valiant book is worth about $2 now so in hindsight, I actually made a really good deal.  I would guess these two Spider-Man books would sell for about $75 - $100 each.

Green Goblin Appearances

I haven't had much luck buying the comics I need on Ebay.  I've bid on a lot but they've been going for way more than I'm willing to pay.  I've mostly been bidding on Amazing Spider-Man #20, but I've been looking out for other key issues such as Hulk #181 (first appearance of Wolverine), X-Men #94 (first appearance of the new X-Men) and other Spider-Man appearances such as Strange Tales annual #2. I'm also trying to fill some holes in my other early Marvel runs, such as X-Men #22.

Anyway, I've been looking through my Spider-Man collection, mostly admiring my early Green Goblin appearances.  He has to be my favorite Spider-Man villain.  A couple years ago I bought #14 (the Goblin's first appearance) at a local comic shop.  I probably paid a little too much, but I liked being able to inspect it in person.

It has a bit of spine roll and a little writing under the issue number on the front cover, but '"d say it's a strong VG.

My copy of #17 (second appearance) is in worse shape.  I don't remember where I got it.  I think I got it as part of a collection I bought from a friend when I was in college.  It's in decent enough shape that it's not high on my list of issues to upgrade, but maybe some day I'll get around to it.

Sorting

It was much more work than I thought it would be, but I finally sorted all of my comics.  I had about seven boxes that needed to be sorted into the rest, which were mostly already in alphabetical order.

The hardest part was simply carrying the 45-50 boxes from the basement up the stairs to the living room, and then back down once I was done.

While I was sorting, I watched the Watchmen movie.  I was surprised how closely the movie followed the comics, at least the first few issues that I currently read.  It was pretty violent, but a good story.

I've been watching Ebay for a few more issues of Amazing Spiderman tat I need, mainly #20, but I'm not finding much that I consider a reasonable deal.

Supplies Have Arrived

Today I received the 500 boards and bags I ordered to help me get organized this weekend.  I bought them form a vendor on Amazon.  I was a little surprised to see how the arrived.  The bags were fun, packaged in Ultra Pro bags of 100.

But the boards arrived loose, in a big stack in the shipping box.  I have no proof that they're Ultra Pro boards, but they fit the bags well so I guess they'll do.

Amazing Spider-Man #10

It's been a long time since I've bought an Amazing Spider-Man comic.  After selling a few duplicates from my collection on ebay, I used the proceeds to buy #10.  This comic is in really nice shape, especially for what I paid for it.  Many of the other copies I've seen on ebay (and I've been watching for quite a while) have some very dark marks on the cover, tape, spine roll, etc.

This copy has some spine wear and a few creases on the cover.  The staples are tight and the inside pages are just off white.  I"m really happy to have this in my collection.

Next weekend I plan to spend the whole day Saturday organizing my collection.  I bought 500 bags and boards and am ready to sort and alphabetize.  My goal is to have my whole collection alphabetized and in order in my closet.  Maybe I'll even pick out a few more to sell on ebay.

Watchmen #5

I read Watchmen #5 tonight.  It was pretty good, with the unmasking of Rorschach.  I now need to buy #6 to continue.

Flipping Comics

Sunday night I had three ebay auctions end for some duplicate Spider-Man comics I decided to sell.  I sold numbers 27, 39 and 40, which are all Green Goblin appearances.

That money didn't last long in my Paypal account.  Tonight I bid on and won Amazing Spider-Man #10.  I'll post it when I get it in the mail.

That leaves only 7 issues I need to complete my Amazing Spider-Man collection.  I need issues:

  • 1 (yeah, right)
  • 3
  • 4
  • 5
  • 6
  • 9
  • 20
I also have many that could be upgraded to nicer copies.  For instance, my #2 only has a front cover, the back is missing.  But, for the $25 I paid for it several years ago, I'm happy to have it.
